Does our health industry profit from making us sick?

“It is an unfortunate fact of life in what is known as our civilized world, that the majority of people have been conditioned by clever marketing, government backhanders and peer pressure, to pay those who are supposed to make us and our pets healthier to make the consumer sick!”

A strong statement, with more than a grain of truth.

All industries profit, as we live on a capitalist planet, and therefore the more patronage we give to a particular sector, the more it profits – that is simple logic.

The definition of health is currently listed as:

  • the state of being free from illness or injury

However, many do not believe that to be sufficient, as nutritionists and holistic practitioners more often than not meet clients who, as far as the conventional health profession are concerned meet those conditions, but do not consider that they are healthy.

Should health therefore not be considered as:

  • a person or animal thriving in their environment, physically, mentally and spiritually?

Many of us are aware of the phrase “we are what we eat” and that as every cell is our body is regularly replaced, each being made from what is consumed, diet is the cornerstone of health. However, many do not realize the caveat that we cannot be what we eat, if we cannot digest it, and therefore “we are what we digest” is much more accurate statement.

 So, what do we digest?

That is dependent on what we consume!

Gluten, starches and GMO’s have been shown to negatively effect digestion, as have steroids and many other pharmaceuticals, all found in non-organic food and food adjacent products. Anything consumed which has a synthetic component has a greater possibility for a negative effect on health and this includes things in our environment that we inhale and chemicals we put in our drinks, and on our skin, as these all hit our blood stream and have to be processed by the body.

So, back to the original statement.

How is our ‘Health Industry’ making us sick?

If anything we consume effects our health, then food, drink, pharmaceuticals, dental amalgams, tobacco, toiletries and beauty products all have to be considered a part of the ‘health industry’.

  • Food
    • The majority of ‘food’ on the shelves in our supermarkets or served in restaurants would not have been considered to be ‘food’ by our grand-parents and is choc full of synthetic components such as artificial sweeteners, colours and preservatives, let alone being made from highly processed ingredients.
    • In today’s rushed life of convenience these ‘food adjacent products’ fly out of the door at a rate of knots, making the manufacturer and the supermarkets profit, but having a negative effect on health.
    • It is worth noting that the country with the biggest ‘fast food industry’ and the widest range of ‘convenience foods’ is also the country with the highest rate of cancer, heart disease and diabetes.
  • Drink
    • In order to make profits, as the ‘health industry’ and government have warned us against ‘fat’ and ‘sugar’ the majority of drinks available (other than spirits) now come in ‘fat free’ and ‘sugar free’ versions, just as do many ‘food’ products.
    • It has recently been shown that it is not ‘fat’ perse that is the issue, but the type of fat that causes harm and that whilst sugar is negative to health, synthetic replacements are worse.
    • Alcohol available in a huge variety of flavours dehydrates the body, which has a negative knock-on effect.
  •  Pharmaceuticals
    • There are no ‘conventional’ pharmaceuticals that do not have a list of known side-effects.
  • Dental amalgams
    • Made with mercury and sit in the mouth for life constantly leeching vapour into the body. Noted effects of mercury are:
      • “High levels of mercury vapor exposure are associated with adverse effects in the brain and the kidneys. FDA has reviewed the best available scientific evidence to determine whether the low levels of mercury vapor associated with dental amalgam fillings are a cause for concern.” FDA
  • Tobacco
      • Harms nearly every organ of the body
      • Causes many diseases and reduces the health of smokers in general CDC
  • Toiletries & Beauty Products/Cosmetics
    • Many toiletries and beauty products contain a number of ingredients that are proven to cause harm, these are often, but not restricted to:
      • Aluminium
      • Endocrine Disruptors such as:
        • Parabens
        • Dibutyl phthalate
        • BHA and BHT
        • Siloxanes
        • Sodium Laureth Sulphate (SLS)
        • Tricolosan
      • Formaldehyde-releasing preservatives
      • Cancer causing DEA-related ingredients

N.B. Please see these great articles from David Suzuki on cosmetics & their chemical ingredients.

The list could go on, but it is clear that in fact the majority our ‘health industry’ does profit at the same time as making the consumer sick.
